Rome is the biggest Italian city and
the capital of the country. It's also the most popular
travel destination in Italy. The home of one of the world's
greatest ancient civilizations and the Pope, Rome — about
3.000 years old today — is a must-see city.
The city houses a lot of world art treasures. There is
an endless amount of churches, galleries and museums in
Rome.
Galleria Borghese contains one of the largest collections
of art masterpieces in the world, including works by Raphael,
Titian, and Caravaggio, plus amazing Baroque and Neo-Classical
sculptures by Bernini and Canova.
The historical part of Rome takes a wide space of the
city. The Aurelian wall surrounds it and that's there the
most of the museums and monuments can be found. This district
is crowded any time of the day, any time of the year. As
in all the big cities there are traffic jams in the heart
of the city and parking places are very hard to find.
Mouth of Truth, so-called "Bocca della Verita", in
the portico of the church of S. Maria in Cosmedin is a
very interesting place for visit. Put your hand in the
mouth of this ancient sewer cover — legend says that
liars' hands will be bitten off.
Rome is famous for its squares and fountains. Fontana
di Trevi, Piazza Navona, Piazza della Rotonda (Pantheon),
Piazza di Spagna, Campo De' Fiori are surely the places
you shouldn't miss when traveling to Rome.
Spanish Steps is no ordinary staircase, it's very beautiful
architectural monument and popular place for meetings.
Ancient Rome was the strongest power of its time. Now
the remains of its history became popular tourist places.
The Foro Romano (Roman Forum), once the political, commercial
and social center of Rome and impressive is the gigantic
oval Colosseo (Colosseum) (the scene of gladiatorial conquests)
embody the glory of the ancient Rome.
Trastevere's area is the most typical for Rome with its
narrow streets, the small piazzas and the big amount of
restaurants and bars. Above Trastevere lies the Gianicolo,
a small hill from which one can admire the most exiting
panorama of the town.
Being in Rome, you can also visit Vatican. The Vatican
is out of the oldest area of the city. It's the smallest
state in the world but very rich and influential. Mecca
for all Catholics, Vatican receives a lot of religious
travelers from all over the world. St Peters Basilica is
the largest church in the world.
Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's astonishing frescos
attracts long queues of art-lovers but is really worthy
it!!!
The archeological visit of the Appia is very interesting
too. After only a few minutes by car you can reach Castelli
Romani, an area, famous for its small medieval villages.
Rome is situated in the region of Lazio, which is famous
for its food. Robust flavors and rich sauces abound in
many typical dishes of the area, and pasta and gnocchi
in all their many forms are served in restaurants across
the city. |
